During the past 20 years Chris Barnes has built and managed multidisciplinary support teams at the elite level of several sports (Soccer, Rugby League, Basketball). In 1997 he was the first full-time Sports Scientist in the English Premier League, establishing Middlesbrough FC as a pioneer in what was a new discipline at the time. In subsequent years the model introduced at Middlesbrough was replicated at many other clubs and today Sports Science is at the core of operations across soccer in the UK. In 2009 Chris formed his own Consultancy, CB Sports Performance Ltd, providing support services to a number of sports and commercial organisations. He has continued to support elite level soccer in the UK (Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion, Queens Park Rangers) and abroad (Brondby IF). As a Performance Consultant, Chris has worked across a range of sports. He worked with GB Basketball leading into the 2012 Olympic Games, building a team of professionals to deliver an interdisciplinary support programme to all athletes. A key component of this programme was the use of novel technologies and methods to optimize the benefits of time spent in camp. He also led on the development of a sports science support programme for England Rugby League leading into the 2013 World Cup. In addition to supporting professional sports, Chris has advisory roles with Catapult Sports, Nike and Red Bull, as well as working closely with UEFA and CAF to deliver education programmes for performance staff. Over the past 10 years Chris has been a huge advocate for the use of tracking technologies to map and monitor training load in athletes. His philosophies are built around creating individual training ‘fingerprints’ in team sports athletes, which are used to develop programmes to optimize sporting performance. Chris is active on an academic level, regularly publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, and is a regular speaker at National and International Conferences. He is a Visiting Fellow role with Staffordshire University, providing guidance to Junior staff members and post-graduate students. On a professional level, he is an active member of the Executive Committee for the Football Medical Association (FMedA) and the Accreditation Committee for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). |
